Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common epilepsy syndrome with focal seizures. These seizures are often associated with auras. TLE often begins in childhood. Research has shown that repeated temporal lobe seizures can cause the hippocampus to shrink over time. The hippocampus is involved with memory and learning. Although it may take years of temporal lobe seizures for measurable hippocampal damage to occur, this finding underlines the need to treat TLE early and as effectively as possible.

MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS

pilepsy comes from a Greek word meaning ‘possession.’ The Greeks believed seizures were caused by demons, and regarded them as a supernatural phenomenon. The true nature of epilepsy has long been distorted by myth and fear, and people continue to hold mistaken notions about the disorder.

Welcome to My New Blog

Posted by apurplecow on January 30, 2010

I am learning how to do things on my blog on WordPress.  There are many differences from blogger to here.  It may take awhile but I will learn how to maki this blog do what I want it to do.  The best part of the new blog is the pages.

I want to have tutorials easily available to my blog readers and I am going to set-up a page for my tutorials.

I am also going to set-up a page for a listing of the Awareness  Ribbon Colors and the Causes represented by each color.  I am striving to have one of the most comprehensive lists of Awareness Colors.

I have 2 shops on Etsy and I plan to have a page for each one.

I am going to promote this new blog address with a give-away.  I am still hammering out the details but the main prize is going to be really nice.  I still have to figure out the hoops that you will have to leap through to enter the contest.  I will let you know real soon.

Interview with The Curious Pug

Posted by apurplecow on January 4, 2010

Yesterday’s blog post was about my experiences trying to add a new landing page to my Facebook Fan Page. I mentioned that The Curious Pug’s blog was the source of my information on how to do that. I had a little difficulty with my ability to follow instructions and I contacted The Pug for assistance. I love meeting people through my business especially when they are as friendly and helpful as The Pug.

Today I have an Interview with The Curious Pug.

Who is “The Curious Pug”?
I have a pug named Cyrus Bean who is always wondering what I’m doing or where I’m going. He is often in the same room as me, and if he’s not napping or snoring away, he will sit and look at me with his big concerned eyes and head tilted wondering what his crazy human is doing. Or perhaps he is wishing for a treat (which I’m pretty sure occupies 99.8% of his brain).

So it only made sense to name my shop The Curious Pug in his honor :)

How long have you been an Etsy Seller?
I’ve been a seller since November 6, 2009. But I’ve had a buyer account since August 2008. It wasn’t until I went into my 5th month of unemployment due to the economy that I decided, gee, now would be the perfect time to open an Etsy shop!

How long have you had your FB Fan Page?
Also since November 09. I signed up for all my networking sites around the same time once I decided on a shop name.

What gave you the idea to create the “Landing Page” for your FB Fan Page?
I saw another Etsy seller’s fan page with their landing page and I thought it looked really professional and different. I didn’t even know there was a Facebook app that allowed you to do that. So I searched on Google and discovered all the information I needed to know in order to set it up, but it was scattered about and not all in just one place, so that’s why I decided to make the tutorial my own way, step-by-step :)

I noticed on you blog that you have posted several tutorials. Can you tell us what tutorials are planned for the future?
I just created one today on how to set up a Google Analytics account for your Etsy shop and blog. And I was thinking about maybe doing a tutorial on how to create a slide-show with music for YouTube using Google Picasa. I’m always welcome to new tutorial suggestions and if I feel I can create a good tutorial, I’d be more than happy to make one up.

Please tell us 3 things about you that would surprise us.
- I’m an x-ray tech and I love seeing bone fractures. Nothing shocks me anymore :)
- I am a huge fan of 80s music. I will usually listen to Pandora Radio when I’m sewing and leave it set on the 80s channel.
- I watch way too many movies and will usually make some sort of quote reference to them when talking to someone and they have no clue what I’m talking about! I find it amusing :)

I  know that the Curious Pug loves receiving emails and comments from her readers and customers.

"Be Aware" Treasury

Posted by apurplecow on November 6, 2009

I curated a treasury of Awareness items. Please visit the Treasury and click on each item and leave a comment. Show it some love and maybe we can make the Front Page. It was fun doing this so I may do it more often and with the different ribbon colors.

Epilepsy is sometimes referred to as a “storm in the brain” and that is a pretty good description. Epilepsy is a disorder characterized by episodes of greatly increased neural activity in the brain. During a seizure, a person may experience strange sensations and emotions, convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness. Neurons may emit signals as many as 500 times a second during these episodes, much faster than the normal rate of about 80 times a second. that is over 6 times the normal rate. Basically, the electrical activity in your brain goes into maximum overdrive. That’s why most people fall into a very deep sleep after a seizure. Their brain has just run a marathon.

Now for some facts and figures:

About 1 in 100 people in the US have experienced seizures or have been diagnosed with epilepsy. If you know more than 100 people chances are that you know someone with epilepsy.

There are more than 40 different kinds of seizures. Hundreds of different epilepsy syndromes (disorders characterized by a specific set of symptoms) have been identified.

Currently available treatments can control seizures at least some of the time in about 80% of persons with epilepsy. However, about 600,000 persons with epilepsy in the United States have intractable seizures, and another 400,000 receive inadequate relief from available treatments.
