Veteran’s Quilt

Posted by apurplecow on December 27, 2009

In early December I was looking through the Alchemy listings and came across one titled “Service Memebers Ideas”.  I was intrigued for many reasons. First, I am married to a Veteran,  Second, my father is a veteran and last but not least, my two step-sons are currently serving in the military.

I soon found out that the owner of a a shop on Etsy, Ginksburg’s Handmade Dresses, Quilts & Fashion Jewelry, intended to donate a Veteran’s Quilt from her shop to a veteran.  I decided to see if I could win the Veteran’s Quilt for my father.  I filled out the entry form and waited.

About a week later I was notified that I won.  I was so excited.  I didn’t tell my Father about it, I decided to let it be a surprise.
Here is a link to the shop:

He called me when he received the quilt.  He loved it!  The quilt had several insignia embroidered on it.  My step-mom remarked on how well-made it was.
Unfortunately, I live about 20 miles away from them and I did not get a chance to see the quilt myself until Christmas.   And then I was surprised.  Look at the pictures of this quilt.  It is a wonderful momento, reminding us of all the men and women who have served this great country.

I did a little window shopping and I want to share some of the other treasures in this shop.
Gee, this one is one of my favorites:
and this one just makes me feel good:

this is so cute.  I wish I had a granddaughter:

this is the cutest apron:

Thank-you very much for this great quilt.

New Era: comment = Hug

Posted by apurplecow on August 3, 2009

My husband, Larry, and I both have Facebook pages to keep in touch with family and close friends.  I don’t send “gifts”, or “hugs”, or ”plants”, or anything else.  I don’t see the purpose.  In fact, I don’t make many comments on other peoples posts.  I will if the subject interests me or I can make a joke.

A few weeks ago, my husband, Larry, and I had a stressful 24 hours.  It started with a phone call from his daughter.  Both of Larry’s sons are in the military and both are in Afghanistan.  One of his sons was in an “incident”.  Details were sketchy at first and we were worried.  Larry was posting the information on Facebook as it came in.
I found out that day that during stressful times, Each Comment = 1 Big Hug.  That day each comment left by friends and family reminded us how much they cared. It took 24 hours for Larry to finally speak with his son on the phone.  He is OK.  Just a concussion and 2nd degree burns that he got rescueing the other 3 men in the vehicle.

So now I get to the title of this blog.  Each comment really did feel like a hug.  They were all warm and soothing.  I know that sounds funny, but we are all tied to our computers now.  It is how we communicate with each other.

Since then I have tried to be more attentive when I check the posts on Facebook.  Now I am trying to leave a comment when I think the person making the post needs a hug.

I would like to say “Thank-You” to everyone who left comments for caring enough to give us a  “hug”, I mean a comment.

My 2 Sons

Posted by apurplecow on July 21, 2009

I keep promising to post regularly, but life keeps getting in the way.

We had a tense few hours last week.  Both of my husbands sons are in the military and both are in Afghanistan.  I received a call from my step-daughter about an injury sustained by Ken (the oldest). For about 1 hour (I checked the phone log, cuz I thought it was 3-5) all we knew was that he had been injured and that he was OK. We finally got the details. His armoured vehicle ran over a mine. He got out right away but went back in for the other guys.  He said he had to because they were just kids and needed his help.   He had a concussion, neck and back injuries and he inhaled the chemical in the fire extinguisher.

His brother, Larry Jr, called a couple of days later.  All he heard was that his brother was injured.  His Dad explained the accident and the extent of Ken’s injuries.

As a rule, I do not like to impose my political views on others and don’t want theirs.  This is not a forum for politics.  I was not going to put this type of topic in my blog because I know that some are against us being in Afghanistan.  The right or wrong is not what this is about.

This post is about 2 boys that I care about and the danger that they are in.  Please take a moment (regardless of you opinion of the military) and pray that these 2 boys and all their companions in the service come home to their loved ones.

Thank you
